Active Youth Initiative Support Program

The Active Youth Initiative Support Program is to assist low income youth who would benefit from increased physical activities, but cannot afford the enrollment fees for programs at the Muscatine Community Y, the Youth Sports Foundation, and City Parks & Recreation programs. Our emphasis is to engage kids who have not previously been involved in formal sports programs. We are asking staff listed below to refer students facing unhealthy body mass issues to use available activity programs as part of lifestyle changes to promote better health:

  • School nurses
  • Physical education teachers
  • DHS staff
  • Lutheran social services staff
  • Community services staff

Upon discreetly verifying the youth's family income qualification (based on free or reduced school services/lunch programs) we hope staff will enthusiastically assist appropriate individuals to utilize these grants. We asked the staff assistant the youth with a simple application process and mail the completed signed form to the appropriate program staff. For more information please contact your school's administrative staff.

This program is one component of a larger collaborative effort between the Muscatine Community School District and the University of Iowa to proactively prevent potential weight related health problems of the youth in our community.
